Vodafone has cautioned iPhone 4S users from updating their handset to the latest version of iOS, amid a welter of complaints from owners who’ve already downloaded the software.

Since iOS 6.1 was made available back in January Apple forums have been awash with iPhone 4S users testifying that the platform bump causes battery longevity problems, as well glitches with 3G connectivity.

In response, Vodafone has today urged its customer base to hold off for the next version [of the iOS operating system] while Apple fixes 3G performance issues”.

The warning solely applies to the iPhone 4S, it seems, with iPhone 5 and iPhone 4 owners free to download sans worry. iPad and iPad mini users also appear to be unaffected.

Voda added: “Some customers may occasionally experience difficulty in connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the Internet.

“Apple is working on a solution to their software issue. These connection problems are intermittent.”

Despite the network’s assurance, Apple has, in fact, yet to acknowledge the problem. Which is something that won’t surprise anyone familiar with the tech giant’s policy when it comes to software problems. If and when Apple does break cover, however, we’ll be sure to let you know.
