Vodafone has finally begun selling smartphones running Windows Phone 8, launching five handsets for sale in Blighty today.

The Big V is now offering – for the first time – the Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia 820 and Lumia 620, and the Windows Phone 8X and Windows Phone 8S by HTC on a range of pay monthly tariffs.

The Lumia 920 (in black and yellow), 820 (black and red) and 620 (blue and white) are free from £42, £33 and £21 per month respectively, while the HTC 8X (black and blue) and the 8S (blue) are also free on contracts starting at £33 and £21 monthly in that order.

Srini Gopalan, Consumer Director Vodafone UK, said: “We’re pleased to announce that from today our customers in the UK can get their hands on a wide range of Windows Phone 8 devices.

“We know there is a lot of interest in both the Windows Phone experience and the range of smartphones that use it. As well as providing consumers with a personalised experience, designed to keep them closer to what matters most to them in their lives, Windows Phone also helps business users stay in touch with the office wherever they are.”

Here comes treble

Windows Phone has steadily gained momentum in the UK after a rocky start. The OS has almost trebled its market share over the last 12 months thanks to strong sales of Nokia and HTC phones, with initial demand for the latter’s 8X and 8S smartphones outstripping supply.

The launch of Windows Phone 8 handsets on Voda comes hot on the heels of news that it will soon be offering a 4G LTE service, having purchased spectrum for the super-fast standard at a recent auction.

“Two of the Windows Phone 8 devices we are launching today [the Lumia 920 and 820] also form part of our growing range of ‘4G-ready’ handsets. Anyone who buys one of our ‘4G-ready’ phones will be good to go as soon as Vodafone 4G arrives,” noted Gopalan.
