Amazon’s first-ever branded smartphone will feature a larger screen than earlier reports suggested, as the retail giant reacts to consumer demand for more expansive handsets.

According to sources cited by DigiTimes, the much-talked about Amazon handset, which has now assumed the same kind of tech-fable status as the low-cost iPhone, will pack a 4.7-inch screen.

Amazon originally planned to equip its challenger with a more modest 4.3-inch display, which was about the size of display that was a la mode for top-end handsets around 2011.

Unofficially known as the Kindle Phone, Amazon's effort is expected to land some time around the second quarter. However, the same insiders indicate this is prone to change amid signs that “production progress at its manufacturing partner, Foxconn International Holdings (FIH), has not been as smooth as expected”.

As with the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet, the company’s phone is likely to run Android. It’s also possible that Amazon will follow the same sales model as its slate and sell the phone cheaply with the intention of making its money from downloads.
