iOS 7 concept

The next major iteration of Apple’s iOS operating system will feature ‘flatter’ aesthetics with a predominantly black and white colour scheme, claim people familiar with developments.

According to sources of 9to5Mac, Jonathan Ive, who’s currently heading the development of iOS 7, is aiming to bring the same world-beating minimalism to the operating system as he has to the iPhones themselves.

Among the various changes incoming include tweaks to the home screen, which retains its current grid-like interface, but features redesigned icons for native apps with a significant reduction of gloss, shadows and skeuomorphic textures.

Many pre-loaded apps, such as Mail, Calendar, Notes and Maps, will gain a more uniform appearance with flat white textures. However, it won’t all be colourless, as each app will reportedly feature a unique colour theme with a white base.

Elsewhere, the Notifications Centre will be stripped of its dark linen background for a plainer dark grey/black colour with white text. Game Centre’s green felt will be removed in favour of a white background, while Newsstand will lose its wooden-shelf interface to make way for silver-like texture.

In terms of new features, iOS 7 is widely expected to include integration for Flickr and Vimeo, as well as in-car support for Maps and Siri.

Apple is also rumoured to be working on a fingerprint scanner for the iPhone using technology developed by its recent acquisition, AuthenTec.

iOS 7 is expected to officially debut on the next iPhone – unofficially dubbed iPhone 5S – in September. However, we’re sure to get a look at the new OS much sooner at the iMaker’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference next month.
