Sony has unveiled a new smartwatch, gazumping Apple in the race to respond to growing demand for wearable technology.

Billed as a 'multi-functional digitial watch' and designed to be paired with Android phones, the SmartWatch 2 is dust and water-resistant (it's got an IP57 rating) and comes with a suite of specially created apps.

These allow users to handle calls by touching their handset, take a photo remotely with the camera app, view mapping software and check emails.

As you might expect, it also packs a fitness app in the form of Runtastic and lets users adjust volume levels on their music player remotely.

Stefan K Persson, Head of Companion Products at Sony Mobile Communications, said:“Competitors are only now launching first generation devices, while we are already launching a third-generation device with all the insight gained from over half a million customers combined with Sony’s wealth of technology expertise to create the best ever smartwatch experience.

“The future of wearable devices is incredibly bright with analyst research predicting 41 million ‘smart’ watches will be sold by 2016.

“We have over 200 unique apps dedicated for Sony SmartWatch with over one million downloads to date and we are continuing to work with our strong developer network to deliver ever more compelling smartwatch experiences.

According to Sony, the SmartWatch 2 also offers the longest battery life for a smartwatch and features easy one-touch set via NFC.

The device will hit retail in September and will be customisable with coloured straps.
