Samsung smartwatch concept

Consumers have finally warmed to the notion of smartwatches, a uSwitch poll reveals, in the year some of tech’s biggest hitters are set to launch techno timepieces that can be paired with users’ smartphones.

Of 1,514 uSwitch Tech readers surveyed, some 36.5 per cent said they were at least considering buying a smartwatch this year. And while that means that 63.5 per cent aren’t looking to add said accessory to their gadget collection, it still suggests that there is at last real demand for the devices.

The finding comes after previously released smartwatches failed to find a market in the UK. 2010’s LiveView from Sony and sWaP’s effort, which actually made and received calls, both met with a frosty reception from consumers, despite some favourable reviews and the odd award from the tech press.

A second Sony timepiece, the imaginitively titled SmartWatch 2, is set to land in the UK on September 9th, while Apple’s iWatch, which will apparently have fitness monitoring front and centre, has been in testing on the tech giant’s California campus for months.

Deadly rival Samsung is set to launch a smartwatch, apparently dubbed GEAR, at the IFA technology get-together in September, at a press call that is also likely to be marked by the arrival of the Galaxy Note 3 phablet.

All three devices are likely to use NFC to pair with owners’ smartphones and enable them to access key functions remotely.
