Nokia’s stunning new Lumia 1020 has been widely heralded as the best camera phone ever made. But despite being critically lauded, it appears the handset is off to a slow start in the US, if tech analysts are to be believed.

William Power from analyst firm RW Baird says he and his team visited a string of AT&T stores in the US, where the phone went on sale exclusively last week, and that while staff are seemingly happy to sing its praises, sales were not sky high.

In a note, Power stated that reps were “quick to point out that early sales were modest at best”.

He added: “When asked what was limiting consumer adoption of the 1020, reps commonly cited the $300 price target and consumer concern with switching over to a new OS as the biggest hurdles.

“We only found a handful of stores that sold out of the device on launch day, and in several cases, we were the first people to ask specifically about the 1020.”

Nokia is yet to roll the Lumia 1020 out globally, with a UK launch expected in September.

With Samsung expected to release its Galaxy Note 3 that month and Apple’s iPhone 5S also due, it seems Nokia is going to need to up the ante in order to make any kind of impression.
