Three news

Three has confirmed that it will begin rolling out is 4G network this December. And best of all, existing customers with 4G ready phones will not have to pay a penny extra for the pleasure of using the next-gen network.

The carrier has previously said this would be the case, but has at last given a firm(ish) launch date for its upgraded network.

London, Birmingham and Manchester will be the first to get Three 4G in December, before a wider rollout in January 2014. Three says it will offer the service in 50 towns and cities by the end of next year, with 98% population coverage by the end of 2015.

Existing Three punters won’t need to sign a new contract or change tariffs, with the company promising it will still offer all you can eat data. A software update to 4G-ready phones is all that will be required to make the leap from 3G.

However, there’s no word yet on how much it will cost new customers wanting to join Three 4G. Neither is there a specific launch date in December.

But with O2, Vodafone and EE all serving up pricey tariffs, expect plenty of Three customers to stay loyal with this latest news.

“When it comes to coverage, EE wins hands down – the other networks certainly have some catching up to do.

“While Vodafone and O2 can’t compete on coverage or match EE’s touted average speed of 24Mbps, they will be trying to win over customers from today with a selection of perks. To add to fuel to the fire, Three has announced that it will launch its own 4G service in December.

“But while Vodafone and O2 have upped the ante with freebies such as Sky Sports and streaming music with O2 Tracks, Three has kept it simple. The web-savvy provider will deliver 4G at no extra cost, in the hope that offering the service with no premium – as well as the freedom of unlimited data and no hassle in getting set up – will outweigh perks from the competition."
