HTC is priming a gold version of its One flagship smartphone. A newly leaked image shows the device’s somewhat gaudy hue, just days after Apple officially revealed its ‘champagne’ gold iPhone 5s.
The pic of the device was leaked on Chinese social network Sina Weibo by the same person who last month brought us snaps of the blue edition of the handset, which is now officially up for grabs.
The gold HTC One looks a touch more bling than Apple’s new effort, which is a more understated affair. But seeing as HTC is trying to corner the lucrative luxury market in China, a territory where it’s enjoyed success in the past, perhaps this approach will help nudge sales along nicely.
HTC will rightly protest that this isn’t simply a case of copying Apple. There’s a date stamp on the pictured blower which says it was made on August 12th, four weeks before Tim Cook and co revealed their new effort.
With HTC’s sales sliding and the company expected to post a loss this quarter, its Taiwanese executives will be desperate for this, or any, of its phones to sell well in the run up to Christmas. Despite this natty effort, it’s hard to imagine HTC having a golden future.
