Tim Cook at Apple keynote

Rumours that the iPad mini 2 could be in seriously short supply have been corroborated by the tech giant’s CEO, setting the scene for murderous struggles in retail outlets as consumers battle to their hands on them in the run-up to Christmas.

In recent weeks, a slew of reports have surfaced claiming that an imminent shortfall of Retina Displays would leave Apple struggling to keep up with demand for its just-refreshed tablets.

Speaking today at Apple’s earnings call, main mover Tim Cook didn’t admit outright that the company expects to be unable to service the needs of would-be iPad mini 2 owners, but certainly acknowledged that shortages are a very real possibility.

He said: "It's unclear whether we will have enough for the quarter or not.

"We know how many we will have, but you really don't know the demand until you start shipping."

Surveys carried out before last week’s official iPad mini 2's unveiling revealed that the Retina Display was by some distance the most-wanted feature on the second iteration of Apple’s micro-sized slate.

However, perhaps surprisingly given the iPad mini 2's cheaper price point and the aforesaid enhanced screen , a uSwitch Tech poll suggests that the high-end iPad air could outsell the iPad mini 2 by a margin of almost two to one.
