Apple’s second attempt at the kind of micro-tablet Steve Jobs once dismissed as a non-starter is now mere hours away. But that’s still time enough to sneak in one last look at the device unofficially dubbed the iPad mini 2 before it drops at tonight’s launch event.

Sourced by French tech site NowhereElse.fr, leaked snaps show the 7.9-inch slate in a fetching shade of gold, adding weight to speculation that the device will come in the same ‘white-silver', 'graphite-grey' and, erm, 'gold' colourways as the iPhone 5S.

More intriguing by far, though, is that the site's photos of the front of the device also clearly show it sports the new home button that also debuted on the iPhone 5S and within which Apple secretes biometric technology.

That suggests that rumours that Touch ID fingerprint scanner will make the transition to tablets are on point too.

It also appears to fly in the face of predictions that Apple is to retain Touch ID soley for the larger, top-end iPad 5, as a means of differentiating it from the more affordable, smaller iPad mini 2.

As is the way with new Apple products and its increasingly hole-ridden supply chain these days, leaks around the iPad mini 2 and iPad 5, which is also expected to show up tonight, have been rife for months.

Major changes to look out for at the showcase include convergence in the design of the slates, with the iPad 5 taking on the smaller bezel and more rounded edges of the iPad mini range.

Both tablets are also set to feature eight-megapixel cameras and sport high density Retina Displays - marking the first time the lush screen has appeared on an iPad mini.
