Sales of the iPhone 4S are surging, boosted by the higher-than-anticipated price of the new iPhone 5C and the arrival of a totally revamped operating system on the older smartphone.

Data from uSwitch Tech and our sister site Omio's network of partner websites reveals that the iPhone 4S’s has outsold the iPhone 5C by 30% since that handset went on sale in the UK on September 20th.

The 4S’s sales fillip comes amid disappointment that the iPhone 5C, which trades premium materials for a more economical polycarbonate plastic shell, isn’t the 'budget-priced' iPhone that analysts expectd. And that consumers were crying out for.

Instead of the mooted price point of £250, which would have made it a viable pay-as-you-go handset, the entry-level 16GB model of the iPhone 5c is £469.99.

The cheapest monthly outlay for the iPhone 5c for a contract that includes a free phone is around £30 per month over a two-year contract.

Conversely, the iPhone 4s is available free at £21 per month, also over two years. Or a shade over £300 from some online retailers when bought outright and without a contract.

Demand for the iPhone 4s will also have been boosted by Apple decision to roll out the all-new iOS 7 software to the handset.

As well as the Control Centre feature that brings one-swipe access to key settings, the fresh version of the operating system adds an improved camera app, better multi-tasking and a rethought notifications centre.
