Apple has admitted that a small number of iPhone 5s handsets are suffering from battery issues, causing them to take longer to charge and leaving users without power after a matter of hours.

Speaking to the New York Times, Cupertino spokesperson Teresa Brewer said: “We recently discovered a manufacturing issue affecting a very limited number of iPhone 5s devices that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life.

“We are reaching out to customers with affected phones and will provide them with a replacement phone.”

Brewer did not say how many handsets are afflicted with the battery problem, but it’s not believed to be more than a few thousand.

The glitch is the latest in a long line of problems Apple has had to face with its new top-end handset.

Earlier this month users complained that iOS 7 stopped iMessage from working, with the 5s subsequently struggling with an out-of-sync accelerometer.

The latter was said to be due to a new part that failed to match the standards of the one found in last year’s iPhone 5.
