Sony has revealed demand for its smartphone line-up increased massively in the last quarter, with the likes of the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra helping the Japanese gadget-maker to post 39.3% sales growth.
That figure is compared to the same three-month period last year. Unlike Apple, though, Sony has not said exactly how many mobiles it shifted over that stretch of time. It’s unlikely to be even close to Cupertino’s 33 million plus iPhones.
However, it does show that Sony’s smartphone business is well on track, especially after the bumpy final few years of its partnership with Ericsson. In fact, it was one of the only areas of growth for the tech giant, which is otherwise struggling.
Sony will be hoping that when the next IDC data on smartphone data is released, its sales will have helped it break out of the so-called ‘others’ category and take a spot among the world’s top-five mobile-makers.
