The latest version of Android will hit Sony’s flagship Xperia smartphone next month, making the handset a strong contender for the first non-Nexus kit to get the software.

According to sources cited by AndroidSAS.com, Sony is preparing a compatible version of Android 4.4 (Kit Kat) now and will roll it out on November 7th.

Subsequently, the phone-maker apparently plans to make the platform bump available for its former 2013 line-leader, the Xperia Z, and for the super-sized Xperia Z Ultra phablet.

As it stands, information is thin on the ground about what Kit Kat, which was thus christened as part of a cross-promotional tie-up with confectioner Rowntree’s, will bring to Google’s OS.

However, leaked photos suggest we’re in line for redesigned apps and a new, flatter and altogether simpler look that borrows a bit here and there from Apple’s similarly rethought iOS 7.

The snaps also showed a revamped phone dialling screen and messaging app, plus a status bar that changes colour depending on the app that’s open.

Kit Kat is nigh-on certain to debut in undoctored, vanilla form on the Google Nexus 5 – the search giant’s fifth-gen, wallet-friendly Nexus smartphone that's set to tip up later this month.
