Apple is looking to offer a repairs service for iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C owners in its retail stores. That’s the word from insiders speaking with 9to5mac, who have revealed a series of details about the scheme.
Users who accidentally smash their screen will be able to get a new one for $149 Stateside, dropping to $79 if they’re signed up to the AppleCare+ warranty programme.
Cupertino will also offer fixes for broken volume buttons, speakers and even cameras, although iPhone 5S owners will not be able to get borked Touch ID sensors replaced in-store, instead having to rely on getting a whole new device.
The aim is to apparently slash the cost to Apple of replacing entire handsets when things go wrong.
The move makes sense, but seeing as backstreet dealers have become adept at offering cheap screen replacements, it’ll be interesting to see how many people use the official scheme.
Apple has already introduced a similar approach for iPhone 5 users, rolling out the service over the summer. The company has yet to comment and there is no news on whether it’ll launch here in the UK.
