UK HTC One owners can look forward to a welcome fillip after Christmas, with the news that the phone-maker plans to rollout Android 4.4 to its flagship phone at the tail end of January.

The Taiwanese company announced its schedule for carrier-branded editions of the One, which is by some distance the best received HTC smartphone in, uh, forever, on Twitter.

"We're working with our local carriers to begin the rollout of Android 4.4 and Sense 5.5 for the #HTCOne from end of January 2014.”

Ordinarily, you’d expect HTC One phones bought off-plan and carrier-free to get the update before those purchased on a monthly contract.

That’s because the former aren’t encumbered by network-specific bloatware that slows down the update process.

Fresh features the newly baked software is set to bring to the One take in a rethought look and feel, the revamped Hangouts app (now with SMS integration) and sundry performance optimisations.
