Apple has surmounted manufacturing problems that caused supply shortages of the iPad mini 2, just in time to hoover up consumers’ Christmas gadget-gift budget.

According to DigiTimes, a whopping four million units of the iPad mini 2, that's the slate officially dubbed the 'iPad mini with Retina Display', passed through Apple's manufacturing partners' factory gates last month.

To put that number in some kind of perspective, the Taiwanese site reckons it's a higher monthly rate of production than the original iPad mini ever achieved.

The escalation in iPad mini 3 manufacturing has been possible after Apple surmounted the production challenges of recreating the larger 9.7-inch iPad’s Retina Display on a 7.9-inch screen.

The problems with the iPad mini 2’s display were thought to be the reason why Apple did not make the device available in retail channels until November.

Yesterday, separate reports surfaced indicating that Apple is also almost fully servicing demand for the iPhone 5S, after weeks of supply shortages. This was borne out by uSwitch invesigations that found that wait times on UK carriers have dropped from four weeks to a few days.

The easing of supply constraints comes after reports that production resources have been reallocated the slow-selling iPhone 5C to the in-demand iPhone 5S.
