iphone 5c price launch

Foxconn is to stop production of the iPhone 5C at one of its largest factories, in the latest sign that the plastic iPhone and Apple's marketing thereof was a major misstep.

According to sources cited by Taiwanese site DigiTimes, Foxconn is to completely call time on manufacturing the handset at its Zhengzhou plant in northern China.

Although this isn’t the main Foxconn factory (that dubious honour goes to its base at Longhua, Shenzhen), its workforce still stands at a whopping 120,000 or so. Which ought to give you some idea of how significant the downgrade in production will be.

The move purportedly follows Apple’s decision to cut orders of the iPhone 5C from Foxconn by 70% from the preceding quarter.

Apple’s other main manufacturing partner, Pegatron has also received lower orders for the 5C. These are apparently down 30% from the previous three-month period.

It’s thought that Foxconn’s Zhenzhou operation will now shift production to the more in-demand iPhone 5S.

Sales of the 5C are thought to have been hampered by a higher-than-expected price point and the perception that it offers little that's new compared with the iPhone 5.

The plastic construction, meanwhile, has split option, with some tech fans positing that it feels cheap and bemoaning Apple’s shift away from premium materials.
