samsung galaxy gear review 5

Samsung has refuted claims emanating from Korea that the Galaxy Gear smartwatch has been struggling to sell since its launch in September.

The gadget-maker told Reuters it had shifted an impressive 800,000 units in the past two months. That number compares to the 50,000 that Business Korea said the company had sold.

However, it’s unclear whether Samsung means devices sold to consumers, or simply the number shipped to retail outlets. If it’s the latter, then the debate about the success of the smartwatch will continue to run.

In a statement, the Korean tech titan said: “It's the most sold wearable watch available in the market place and we plan to expand its availability by expanding mobile devices that work with the Gear.”

Best Buy last month claimed that returns of the device are running above 30%, suggesting customers were struggling with the watch’s awkward interface and hefty design, both of which have drawn snark from critics.

Samsung’s European Vice President David Eun yesterday described the Galaxy Gear as “unripe fruit”, suggesting it would come good soon.
