Apple has revealed that Minecraft: Pocket Edition and Candy Crush Saga are 2013’s most successful iOS apps.

Minecraft was the best selling paid–for app across iPhone and iPad, while Candy Crush was both the most downloaded free app and the highest grossing add–on, thanks to the huge popularity of its in–app purchases.

Minecraft’s simple, yet fascinating building blocks and adventure play, have made it a critical smash this year. Its average rating on the App Store is four and a half stars and it recently appeared in a Channel 4 programme counting down the 25 most influential games of all time.

Candy Crush’s similar popularity and extremely addictive gameplay has helped it to a four star rating. The game is now a must–have for all new iPhone and iPad owners.

In May this year, the App Store passed the 50 billion download mark, just two and half years after it reached 10 billion.
