Christmas has come early for owners of the Motorola Moto G in the US. Android 4.2.2, aka KitKat, is rolling out now, earlier than expected.

The latest version of Android wasn't expected to come to the Moto G until January, but Motorola - which is owned by Google - has managed to get it out early.

This is only for SIM-free models though, so those locked to a network will have to wait a while longer.

There's no word on when KitKat will come to the Moto G this side of the pond, but it shouldn't be too long.

Google has added a few more software treats, as well. If you lock your Moto G with a PIN, you can use Touchless Control without entering the PIN first. Plus, you can use your voice to enter your PIN, so just speak to unlock your phone.

There's a new start-up animation that should get you in the Christmas spirit, too.

Google has also brought the latest camera features from the Moto X to the Moto G, like Drag to Focus and the ability to touch the screen to use manual exposure.

Active Display has also been optimised for KitKat. Active Display is battery-friendly notifications that fade in and out when the phone display is off.

Update: Omio quotes a Motorola spokesperson who says the update will come to UK Moto G handsets from January.
