Samsung has taken on board criticism of the Galaxy Gear’s look and feel and has completely redesigned the smartwatch for the second-generation model, reports suggest.

According to a source cited in a refreshingly frank and almost comically blunt report from ZDNet, the forthcoming version of the Galaxy Gear will be “totally different” to its predecessor, with Samsung opting to change “all the parts that looked dull or boring”.

Samsung’s rethink comes after the device came in for caustic criticism in some quarters for its somewhat bulky design, which saw it dismissed as a ‘smartphone stuck to a watchstrap’.

The Chinese site also claims that 2013’s Galaxy Gear will feature the flexible screen that was originally rumoured to be on board last year’s effort. That in itself ought to go a long way in freeing up the designers to create a more pleasing-looking smartwatch this time around.

Existing rumours suggest that Samsung could debut the Gear 2 alongside the Galaxy S5 smartphone at the tail end of the first quarter or very early in April.

That’s a view seemingly endorsed by ZDNet, which throws its weight behind a March or April due date and names London as the host of the launch event.

Sales numbers for the original Gear are a source of much debate. Believe what you read in some contentious reports and the device apparently limped to just 50,000 sales after two months on the market.

This was apparently down to very limited compatibility with handsets, as well as lukewarm reviews and consumers’ much-discussed reservations over the design.

However, Samsung was quick to contest those numbers and claims the Gear’s real sales figure after a two-month window of availability was around 800,000 units.
