samsung galaxy s5 render

Samsung looks set to include a fingerprint scanner in its forthcoming Galaxy S5 smartphone, as it looks to beef-up its flagship device’s security and compete with Apple’s well–received iPhone 5S.

An anonymous ‘industry source’ told The Korea Herald: "Among the different types of biometric sensors that Samsung is testing for its Galaxy S5, the tech giant will go for fingerprint authentication rather than [the] unintuitive user experience of iris recognition.”

The source suggests that Samsung has realised that iris recognition tech, which had been mentioned in conjunction with the Galaxy S5, could prove clunky when unlocking the device in public places and while driving.

It’s also believed that iris scanners are being ditched because of the need for a dedicated camera, which would add bulk to the device.

The report does not reveal any more details about the Samsung Galaxy S5. However, the handset is widely expected to have a metal chassis, improved camera and a new-look user interface. A launch date is expected in March or April.

The phone’s fingerprint scanner is likely to be studied closely by Apple. Although the legal battle between the two companies is believed to be coming to a head, such a move could provoke Apple into taking further action if it deems the tech too similar to its own.
