Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S5 next month on the eve of the tech world’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) event, one of the industry’s best-connected analysts claims, as the phone-maker bids to make the S4’s lukewarm reviews and slower-than-expected sales a dim and distant memory.
In a typically forthright, loose-lipped post on Twitter, Mobile-Review editor and smartphone sector sage Eldar Murtazin revealed he expects the next Galaxy S model to be showcased in Barcelona on February 23rd. That’s the day before the MWC expo officially gets underway.
The Russian firebrand, whose track record includes 'calling' the Nokia-Microsoft love-in months before anyone else, also predicted that we can look forward to the phone hitting shop shelves some time in April, but alas wasn’t any more specific. However, given Samsung’s form with the S4, which was showcased mid-March but didn’t go on sale until April 27th, the S5 isn’t likely to be available until pretty late on in the month.
Murtazin’s final disclosure was that pricing will be in line with its predecessor. That ought to mean an asking price of a shade over £600 if you opt to pick up the S5 SIM-free and off-contract. Or around £40 per month over a two-year contract from day-one of availability.
Samsung Galaxy S5 launch - 18.00. Barcelona. 23 February. Price the same. Launch - end of April. Specs - u know them :) new touchwiz ;)— Eldar Murtazin (@eldarmurtazin) January 21, 2014
Existing rumours, corroborated here by Murtazin, indicate the S5 will feature a wholly revamped version of Samsung’s TouchWiz Android custom skin that does away with rows and rows of apps for something a bit more a la mode.
Leaked photos indicate the new user interface instead takes cues from Windows Phone’s live tiles and HTC’s social networking-focussed, photo-flavoured BlinkFeed.
Spec-sheet fixtures and fittings thought to be on board include a Touch ID-style fingerprint scanner, a 5.25-inch AMOLED screen and an octa-core Exynos 6 or Snapdragon 805 processor.
