flappy birds

The Flappy Bird phenomenon is now officially as dead as a dodo, after its creator brought an end to the game’s reign in app stores at the peak of its popularity.

Developer Dong Nguyen withdrew his opus from the Android Market and the App Store amid a welter of criticism from other devs and serious gamers who see Flappy Bird as the worst kind of populist, depth-free casual game.

Flappy Bird's curious, somewhat perplexing rise to ubiquity – it appeared unheralded in May last year and only really took off in December - has also sparked a slew of insults thrown its creator’s way.

It’s been alleged in some corners of the internet that downloads by ‘bots have been used to manipulate its chart position and give a false impression of the title’s popularity.

In an emotional Tweet to the tech world in which he announced his decision, Nyugen confessed he “cannot take [the criticism] anymore” and was prepared to lose out on estimated revenue of $50,000 per day to make the catcalls stop.

As is to be expected, since the game disappeared last night iPhones with Flappy Bird pre-installed have appeared on sale on eBay.

Naturally, the listings have brought the internet’s many jokers out. At the time of writing, what it’s safe to assume are spurious bids have driven the asking price for one iPhone 5S with Flappy Birds on it up to $99,900.

Is Flappy Birds really the end of gaming civilisation that some people are making out? Or is this a big fuss over nothing?
