Samsung vs Apple collision

Apple is demanding a massive $2 billion in damages from Samsung, as the latest round of the legal fight between the two tech titans gets under way in California this week.

Cupertino says that five of its patents were breached by Samsung, with the Korean company making a counter claim that two of its own patents were stolen and used by Apple.

Apple is also asking for a $40 royalty fee for every Samsung handset and tablet using software that it alleges was stolen and used without permission.

In an attempt to rebuff Apple’s charges, Samsung is expected to call senior Google staff to help shore up its defence.

Andy Rubin, the man who created and sold Android to Google, is being lined up to testify.

Word is he will tell the court that he was working on software used by Samsung, developing it independently of Apple, and that consequently Sammy did not breach any licences.

If Samsung loses, it will be the second time it has faced hefty damages in California after falling foul of Apple patents.

It was ordered to pay $900 million in 2012, relating to older handsets, but this amount was later reduced on appeal. The case is due to begin with jury selection on Monday.
