iOS 7 iTunes Radio for iPhone

Apple is weighing up launching a new iTunes Android app. That’s according to ‘three people familiar’ with Cupertino’s future music strategy.

Word is that the app would form part of a wider plan to reinvigorate Apple’s iTunes offering. That could also mean a Spotify–style streaming service, building on last year’s iTunes Radio, which has struggled to capture users’ imaginations.

The news comes as US album sales continue to slide, down 13%, while digital sales overall also slipped by 11% across The Pond.

By contrast, streaming access is up, with revenue jumping by over 50% in the past year.

An iTunes Android application would also give Apple the chance to take on Google’s own Play Store, which has begun providing stiff competition as more and more users move to the search giant’s platform.

As with all music industry stories, expect this one to rumble on for months before any final decisions are made.
