The freshly arrived 8GB version of the iPhone 5C has taken a haircut on O2, in what will be an interesting litmus test of the phone’s appeal on its first weekend of availability.

From today, Mobiles.co.uk has trimmed £50 off the standard £99.99 upfront cost of the handset when customers sign up for a two-year contract on O2 at £23 per month.

To qualify for the discount, you’ll need to insert the code ‘5C8GB99249’ at the point of purchase.

Allowances are 500MB of 4G data and 500 call minutes per month, as well as unlimited texts. Natch, you'll get membership of O2's priority ticket scheme too.

Internal storage aside, the 8GB version of the iPhone 5C is unchanged from the more capacious more expensive models that debuted last year.

Along with a lightweight, polycarbonate shell, the handset’s spec sheet takes in an enhanced eight-megapixel iSight camera and a beefier A6 processor.

It’s also home to a long-life battery, iOS 7 and support for super-fast 4G networks.

The launch of an 8GB iPhone 5C comes after criticism that the 16GB and 32GB models, which were initially billed as 'low-cost iPhones', failed to appeal to more cost-conscious consumers.

At one stage, the 5C was reportedly outselling the 5C by three to one, leaving Apple sitting on substantial overstocks of unsold smarties.
