Apple’s much hyped iPhone phablets will blend design features from the iPhone 5C and the seventh edition of the iPod, rumours suggest.

According to a source cited by Japanese site Macotakara, the larger handset of the two coming our way in 2014 won’t look hugely different from the maligned 5C and will pack the same shaped volume and mute button and the same rounded edges at the back.

Also making the transition over from Apple's music player is the speaker and microphone layout.

However, in a telling change, the 5C-alike will ditch the current-gen kit's plastic construction for the rather more deluxe anodized aluminium build that Apple favours for the seventh-gen iPod.

This will allow Apple to offer the phablet in a range of colour options while retaining a premium build. You won’t need reminding that the plastic construction was chief among tech fans’ criticisms of the ‘lower-cost’ iPhone.

The site also backs existing talk that two larger iPhones will make it to market this year, with screen dimensions of 4.7- and 5.7-inch respectively.

Naturally, it’s the larger, which comes in at just 7mm thick, that’s seemingly destined to be marketed as the top-end model, while the more compact model takes the place of the 5C.

One consequence of the 5.7-inch edition's thinness is that the rear-facing iSight camera will not be fully encased and will protrude from the shell. But only slightly, it seems.

Both phones are expected along in the autumn, when they may or may not be accompanied by Apple’s first sojourn into wearable tech, the iWatch.
