Apple's much-rumoured iWatch could actually be a fitness band called the iBand, it has emerged. And the Cupertino company could even team up with Nike to make the device.

Sources have told GeekTime that Apple will make the hardware, while Nike will handle the software.

Nike just put the kibosh on its FuelBand device, sacking most of the staff responsible for it and canning any future iterations.

It will, however, continue to support the NikeFuel software and will adapt it to suit other platforms.

GeekTime notes: "Apple is looking to launch a smartband towards the end of this year whose collection of sensors will be able to be used not only to monitor the activity of the wearer, but also to operate other devices as a gestural controller."

It would explain why Nike has thrown in the towel on the FuelBand just as the market for fitness bands, which the sports giant did so much to develop, starts booming.

With Samsung, LG, Garmin and Jawbone all getting involved, it seems everyone is launching their own fitness-flavoured slab of wearable tech right now.

Nike and Apple are practically joined at the hip. Apple CEO Tim Cook sits on Nike's board, and has been seen wearing a FuelBand in the past. He's waxed lyrical about the device too, saying Nike did a "great job" on the product.

The two companies also worked together on the Nike+ iPod program back in 2006.

Cook has hinted repeatedly that Apple has some new product categories on the way. It looks like it could be an iBand that he has up his sleeve, rather than the iWatch of tech-site speculation.
