Nokia has become the latest manufacturer to announce a new flagship smartphone due to hit store shelves in the second quarter, in what surely ranks as a period of unprecedented competition in the gadget game.

The Finnish phone-maker's new 4G LTE-capable Lumia 930 handset is powered by the new 8.1 version of the Windows Phone software and packs a 20-megapixel PureView camera, optical image stabilisation (OIS) and ZEISS optics.

Unveiled at Microsoft's Build event, the 930 also features HD video recording with four high-performance microphones with surround-sound capture and a five-inch 1080p Full HD display with 441ppi.

Rounding off the spec sheet is a 2.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, as well as 32GB of internal storage, a 2420mAh battery and 7GB free OneDrive cloud storage.

As far as software goes, the freshly baked version of Microsoft's operating system that powers the handset adds iOS 7-style one-swipe access to key functions with Action Centre and a rethought start screen.

Impressively for a lower-end end handset, a1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor is on board too, as is 8GB of storage with scope to boost capacity by up to 128GB by adding a microSD card.
