Next year could finally see Samsung make good on years of rumours of flexible screen-toting smartphones, amid chatter that it is pressing ahead with a factory solely for manufacturing bendable displays.

According to sources cited by Chinese site Ledwn, Samsung’s factory is expected to be “fully operational as soon as possible”. This is apparently so that the phone-maker can fit flexible screens on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5.

Until now, Samsung has seemingly withheld investment in the plant, but this stance is purportedly less and less sustainable in the face of increasing pressure from business partners.

The revival of flexible-phone speculation around Samsung, which has showcased bendable prototypes and brought a curved-screen phone to market last year, comes just weeks after it unveiled the Galaxy S5. The Galaxy Note 4, meanwhile, isn’t due for months, let alone the fifth-gen edition.

It’s fair to say, though, that for all the false dawns from Samsung, the increasing homogeneity of handset design means that right now there’s a stronger incentive than ever to develop flexi-phone tech.

Not least because it’s something that would let its smartphones stand out from the crowd.

That could be a real fillip at a time when Samsung’s Galaxy phones’ plastic build is coming under criticism for being ‘cheap-feeling’ next to the deluxe aluminium and glass stylings of the well received HTC One M8 and the iPhone.
