tube wi-fi

Virgin Media’s Tube Wi-Fi service was extended to a further six stations today, allowing its customers and those of EE, O2 and Vodafone to get online with smartphones, tablets and other web-enabled devices in some of London’s further flung, less glam stations.

The extension of the network, which goes live tomorrow, brings Virgin Media’s underground Wi-Fi to Southgate (look it up: it’s near the end of the Piccadilly line. With a lovely art-deco station too), Golders Green, East Putney and Parsons Green.

The service is also landing at the more centrally located stations at Kilburn and West Kensington, bringing the total number of connected stations to 137. Virgin Media pledges more will be added “by the end of the summer” too.

Joe Lathan, director of broadband at Virgin Media said: “Virgin Media’s Wi-Fi on the London Underground has been a huge success with Londoners and visitors alike so we’re delighted to be connecting even more people in more places.

“We’re working with TfL and our wholesale partners to deliver a fantastic experience across the capital and make catching up on emails, checking for travel updates or sending a Tweet easier than ever before.”

Interestingly, Virgin Media has also announced that iPhone and iPad owners dominate the network, with iOS gadgets accounting for 65% of customers using the service.

That compares with 30% of people using Android-powered kits. In contrast to wider market trends that show that demand for BlackBerry phones has plummeted, double the number of BB owners are getting online with Virgin Media’s network than a year ago.

The service is free to Virgin Media, EE, O2 and Vodafone customers. If you’re not with those networks, there’s a pay as you go option with daily, weekly and monthly passes priced £2, £5 and £15 respectively.
