HTC has unveiled a new compact smartphone in the form of the One Mini 2, as it enters the next stage of its bid to turn around last year’s losses.

The fresh addition to the One family features the range’s hallmark metal build, alongside a 4.5-inch Super LCD2 screen and a 13-megapixel rear-facing snapper with HTC’s Zoe app that’s intended to make it simpler to share photos on social networks.

There’s also a five-megapixel camera with a self-timer for superior selfies and the Touch Up editing tool, which “lets you smoothen the skin, eliminate red eye and adjust the contours of the face”. Or just get a bit silly and turn yourself into a big-eyed Manga character.

For the audiophiles, HTC has also fitted its BoomSound tech via dual speakers located at the front of the device. And there's Android 4.4 out of the box too, with the latest version of HTC’s Sense social-slanted custom skin sitting lightly on top.

Peter Chou, HTC CEO, said: “The latest member of the award-winning HTC One family distils the advanced features that have earned it global acclaim, into an elegant, compact handset.

“Its size and tapered edges fit perfectly in a hand, pocket or purse, making it look great and feel even better to use. It’s the perfect choice for those who love the iconic design of the HTC One (M8) yet want something more compact.”

The handset’s spec sheet also takes in 16GB of internal storage, with the option to add a further 128GB of capacity via microSD card, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and 4G connectivity.

And you get HTC’s Windows Phone-alike BlinkFeed homescreen layout which serves up live updates of news you’re interested in and updates from Facebook and Twitter et al.

The handset is landing in, ahem, Glacial Silver and Amber Gold in June. Three and 4G leading lights EE have confirmed they’ll be carrying with the phone with the gold edition exclusive to EE.
