Apple’s top–end, 5.5–inch iPhone 6 may only be produced in limited numbers, due to the inclusion of highly resistant sapphire in the device’s display. That’s according to supply chain sources in a post found on China’s Weibo social network.

Cupertino may be looking at having to pay $280 (£164) for every 5.5–inch, sapphire–based screen it uses on the larger iPhone 6. That compares to just $44 (£25) for the 4–inch sapphire display on the current iPhone 5s.

Inevitably, that means Apple will pass the cost onto the consumer. That means the iPhone 6 phablet edition will only attainable by those looking to stump up a fortune up front or pay through the nose for it every month.

Previous rumours have suggested Apple may only produce the iPhone 6 5.5–inch in small numbers owing to prohibitive costs. Either way, as the gossip builds, it seems almost certain Apple will release its largest phone yet later this year.
