Samsung Galaxy S5 owners can pencil in a very welcome software update soonish, bringing improvements to two of the handset’s biggest ‘sells’ as Sammy bids to take the fight to Apple.

According to Sam Mobile, the upgrade is being rolled out to unlocked, international versions of the Galaxy S5 now. And it’s us in the UK who are getting it first.

The site reports that sweeteners the OS bump adds include a more accurate fingerprint scanner, boosting the Galaxy S5’s security credentials. Until now, Samsung’s tilt at biometric security has been regarded as very much second best to the iPhone 5S’s Touch ID.

The on board camera has been tweaked too, it’s claimed. The result is it opens faster, as does the Gallery application.

Of course an update wouldn’t be update if there weren’t also miscellaneous performance enhancements too, which ought to make for a smoother, slicker smartphone experience all round.

So that’s the good news. The bad news? The update, which is available to via Samsung’s Kies download solution, is only for unlocked Galaxy S5 handsets right now.

If you bought your handset on a monthly contract deal from a carrier, you’ll have to wait while compatibility tests are carried out. That could mean months of waiting yet.
