Split-screen multitasking was one of the few rumoured features Apple failed to launch during last week’s Worldwide Developer Conference. But now some hidden code suggests it could be coming sooner than you think.

See, one developer has fished around in iOS 8’s back end and discovered that Apple will eventually offer the ability for apps to run next to each other taking up 1/2, 1/4 or 3/4 of the screen.

When switching between apps, users will see those utilising the split screen function as one app, saving any confusion when it comes to flicking between add–ons.

The fact it is already kicking around in iOS 8 suggests it could roll out as one of the many beta updates ahead of the main launch in autumn.

For now, only iPad Air users are likely to get the chance to play with split-screen apps, as Apple appears to consider other iOS devices too small to make best use of the tool.
