Mock-ups of the next iPad Air are doing the rounds online today, giving us a good idea at how the slate could look when it lands for real later this year.

Sourced by French site Nowherelse.fr, the snaps of the dummy iPad show the tell-tale sapphire ring and indented home button that would appear to bear out rumours that Touch ID biometric security is coming to Apple slates in 2014.

Interestingly, the non-working prototype also features volume buttons that are secreted in a recess. The existing iPad air features side-located pressers that protrude.

However, with this incremental alteration and a smaller microphone slot representing the only really noticeable design changes, it’s fair to say that it seems to be pretty much business as usual.

A snap of the iPad Air on a pair of electronic scales displaying a reading of 484grams or so does offer proof that it should at least be a slimmer, lighter of kit, though.

By way of comparison, last year’s model came in at 469g for the Wi-Fi-only edition and 478g for the 4G-capable version.

The snaps come amid chatter that this year Apple will beef-up the iPad Air with a muscly A8 processor and could delay its release until December.
