Vodafone has given Samsung a boost in its race to establish a foothold in the wearable tech market before the arrival of the iWatch, with the launch of a promotion that gives away a free Gear Fit fitness accessory with every purchase of the Galaxy S5.

To qualify for the Gear Fit giveaway, you’ll need to sign up online for the 16GB edition Galaxy S5 on a 3G or 4G, 24-month contract with Voda before June 26th.

Perhaps the pick of the contracts is £37 per month, plus a £37 upfront charge. That secures you monthly allowances of 1GB of 3G data per month, as well as unlimited call minutes and unlimited texts.

If it’s a free phone and a free Gear Fit you want, the cheapest tariff is £42 per month. Pick that contract and you’ll also qualify for unlimited texts and data and a monthly 3G data allowance of 2GB.

Launched back in March and billed as the 'back to basics' Galaxy S smartphone, the S5’s feature set takes in a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED HD display, a 16-megapixel camera with super-fast autofocus and a Touch ID fingerint scanner to keep your personal data secure.

The water-resistant Gear Fit, which pairs nealty with the S5 and is perhaps best described Samsung’s take on Nike’s FitBand, measures and records your heart rate and doubles as a pedometer and lets you read your mails and texts.

Apple's iWatch is expected to land in September along with the iPhone 6.
