Android phone owners can now get the seminal Swiftkey Keyboard app for gratis, after the application’s devs opted to waive the standard £2.99 charge.

Until now, users have been able to avail themselves of the intelligent touchscreen keyboard app for free for a month, but were then asked to stump up the asking price to carry on using it.

Swiftkey, which is now on its way to iOS after Apple loosened restricitons on keyboard apps at WWDC, heralded a fresh approach to text entry on smartphones and rapidly became one of the Android platform’s biggest-hitting, best-selling titles.

Its USP is that it's smarter than the average keyboard and is able to learn from your typing habits and mode of expressing yourself.

That meant it was much better at autocorrecting typing fails and predicting the next words in a sentence.

But perhaps its biggest innovation was Swiftkey Flow, which let you enter text by swiping your finger around the screen.

It certainly took a bit of getting used to initially, but proof of how it went down with consumers is born out by the fact that Apple recently dropped a me-too app of its own.

Like the newly liberated Swiftkey, Apple’s tilt at a superior text-entry app will be free to use and will drop with iOS 8 later this year.
