An update for Google Camera, the company’s native Android imaging app, is set to allow owners of Android Wear watches to use their timepieces to control their smartphone’s camera.

In a neat but unsurprising move, if you've got an LG G Watch or Samsung Gear Live you can now fire-up your smartphone's camera app and simply tap your smartwatch when you want to take a pic.

You can also set a countdown timer and see the pic on screen after it’s been taken.

There is however, one major caveat. You can’t preview images live, so you’ll need to frame any shots before using your smartwatch to do the rest.

In some ways, this kind of defies the point of the feature, but at least this is a smart new trick that rival watch-makers will surely regard wtih envy.

The update is available now via Google Play. Google has been pushing its new Android Wear products hard in recent weeks, as it faces up to the reality of stiff competition from Apple’s iWatch come winter.
