Pent-up demand for an iPhone phablet will see the next-gen Apple handset break sales records, reports suggest, after years of Steve Jobs' resistance to adopting larger screens.

According to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal, Apple has ordered a total of between 70 million and 80 million units of the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iterations of the forthcoming smartphone. The tech giant wants them to cover the three months from launch in September to the end of December.

By way of comparison, orders for the equivalent period after the launch of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C totalled somewhere between 50 million and 60 million units.

But it’s not all good news. Somewhat worryingly, Apple has also purportedly ordered extra components to cover 120 million iPhone 6 handsets, apparently in part because it expects problems with the displays.

Given long-standing chatter about challenges Apple has been facing in creating larger displays and ensuring they’re satisfactorily responsive, that might augur ill. Especially with just months to go until the handsets are set to their due date in September.

News of the tech giant’s plans come after uSwitch Tech yesterday unearthed exclusive snaps of the iPhone 6’s rear housing, offering what looks like proof that the handset will feature a light-up logo for notifications.

Other rumoured spec sheet fixtues and fittings include a 13-megapixel Sony camera, redesigned buttons and a new, curvier look.
