Apple has bolstered its iWatch team with two former Nike staffers, adding heft to rumours that the device may still be some way from going on sale.

LinkedIn profiles for hardware engineer Ryan Bailey and sensor software sage Jon Gale, both of whom previously worked on Nike’s FuelBand software, reveal they joined Apple’s payroll in June.

Bailey’s position at the company is Mechanical Design Engineer, while Gale will assume the role of Sensing Systems Engineer.

Both hires come after Nike downsized its FuelBand team, seemingly having reached agreement with Apple that it will dial down support for its fitness band and instead focus on providing software for the iWatch.

They will join a team already staffed with one of the one-time key movers and shakers at Nike's FuelBand program, as well as high-ranking execs from Burberry and Tag Heuer and pioneers in health monitoring tools.

The fresh round of hires of what would appear to be fairly key employees could mean that the iWatch may not be ready to be unveiled in September.

It had been thought that it would be showcased alongside the iPhone 6, with which iWatch buyers will be able to pair their smartwatch via iOS 8’s Health app.

When it does arrive, it’s expected to feature wireless charging, a round face and could come in a choice of 1.6-inch and 1.3-inch iterations.
