Apple could release a higher–end iPhone 6 using sapphire screen technology and charge users more for the privilege of having a tougher display.

The news comes from ‘people familiar with the matter’, who told the Wall Street Journal that Apple is readying a two–pronged approach to the screen tech it uses in its forthcoming iPhone update.

Both the 4.7–inch and 5.5–inch models will apparently offer sapphire screen options, although only if Cupertino is able to source enough of the material to warrant going into mass production.

Previous rumours suggested that constrained supply is the key reason why it is not rolling out sapphire screens to all of its new phones.

Apple has already ploughed money into manufacturing partner GT Advanced’s new sapphire factory, presumably on the basis that production of future iPhones, iPads and iWatches using the material won’t cost nearly as much.

The iPhone 6 is due to make its official bow on September 9th, before going on sale on September 19th. It remains unclear whether the larger model will be released at the same time.
