Apple will only make 3 million units of its highly anticipated iWatch available in 2014, thanks to ongoing problems with screen production. That’s the word from analyst Ming Chi Kuo, a man known for having impeccable contacts in Apple’s supply chain and for getting his predictions bang on the money.

Kuo reckons that Apple is facing issues with producing enough AMOLED screens with sapphire covers, designed to ensure the iWatch can withstand plenty of bumps and scrapes over its lifetime.

iWatch screen problems appear to be becoming a major theme. Earlier this week, screen supplier TPK said it was expecting its shares to drop in the third quarter, reportedly owing to Apple pushing back iWatch production until November.

Kuo says that optimistic predictions that Apple will unleash 10 million iWatch units could negatively impact on the company’s share price.

It is still thought Apple will debut the device in October, upping availability in the New Year. It’s a risky strategy that could leave consumers frustrated at the inability to get hold of such an in–demand device.
