samsung gear s smart watch

Samsung has revealed its latest smartwatch, ahead of next week’s IFA tech trade show in Berlin. The Gear S uses the company’s own Tizen software and comes with the usual array of tracking features.

However, it has one major calling card: 3G. That means punters who pick up the watch can make and take calls directly on the device, send messages using the on-screen keyboard (or via a voice recognition tool) and check social media notifications.

Samsung says it equipped the Gear S with 3G connectivity to allow users to play nice with their smartwatch without needing their handset close by. Those that prefer to have their device at-hand can use Bluetooth or Wi–Fi to connect.

Other features include a heart rate monitor, GPS and Samsung’s own S Health apps. Mapping is provided by Nokia’s excellent HERE service and there’s native Facebook support. And it packs a large, two–inch curved display too.

The Samsung Gear S is due to hit shelves in October, with prices yet to be confirmed. Samsung is also set to release its much–anticipated Gear Circle headset around the same time.
