Consumers in the UK could be shortly set to take receipt of the latest broadband innovation after communication giant Ericsson confirmed that it is looking into mobile broadband services on the W-CDMA platform.
Experts have predicted that W-CDMA (Wideband-Code Division Multiple Access) will see considerable growth during the ensuing 12 months as a result of the third generation mobile wireless technology's ability to greatly increase data transmission rates.
Mikael Persson, manager for W-CDMA strategy and business development at Ericsson, explained yesterday: "Given the increasing global mobile phone subscriber base, which is expected to reach 1.7 billion this year, mobile broadband is emerging, driven by increased demand for mobile, high-speed data access."
Mr Persson added: "I believe that mobile broadband will be the next generation solution for cellular operators and play an important role in boosting revenue streams.
"Given that up to 80 percent of global GSM cellular operators are committed to using W-CDMA, the technological standard is poised to become a global evolution from GSM, aided by economy-of-scale benefits which provide the most cost-effective worldwide roaming services.'
According to figures from Ericsson, the global number of broadband users will reach 240 million this year while the number of W-CDMA users will double to 40 million.
