Almost all of the UK will have access to broadband internet technology by the end of the summer, the secretary for trade and industry has assured.
Patricia Hewitt made the comments as she launched the government's seven-point 'digital strategy' for Britain.
"We will be there within a matter simply of weeks - quite an extraordinary achievement," she said according to the Independent.
"We have seen the prices fall and continuing to fall and take-up rising extraordinarily fast and continuing to rise."
The strategy is aimed at making the UK "a world leader in digital excellence" and "ending the digital divide", Ms Hewitt explained.
As well as a commitment to broadband, the plans aim to give universal online access to public services by 2008, and want all schoolchildren - including those from poorer families - to be able to access ICT at home through a low-cost national laptop.
