Broadband sees households online increase fivefold

The advent of high speed broadband has helped the number of homes in the UK hooked up to the internet increase fivefold since 1998, new research has revealed.

The study conducted by Point Topic showed that in the fourth quarter of 2004, 52 per cent of British homes were connected to the Internet.

This represents a substantial increase on the nine per cent connected during the same quarter in 1998.

The report also reveals that in February of this year, 59 per cent of adults said they had used the internet at home n the prior three months with 52 per cent revealing they used the internet to purchase various goods.

Only 19 per cent of the British population claimed they do not now regularly use the internet.
